14:00 – 15:30 | Arina | Tchaikovsky: Non-Children Story Behind Children’s Album Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Children’s Album (op.39) is perhaps – and surprisingly – one of the most controversial opuses of his. Being inspired by his six-year-old nephew’s interest in piano playing and following the steps of Robert Schumann – a pioneer in composing music pieces, which were not just a set of skill-developing exercises any more, but were created for children to play and enjoy in particular – Tchaikovsky composed the set of twenty-four pieces with pretty names which would speak to every child of his time: “The New Doll”, “Nanny’s Tale”, “The Hurdy-Gurdy Man” And, as any prominent genius composer, he, of course, did not forget to put the meaningful and far-from-childish story between the lines and into the pieces, and it is to be played out – with words and music. |
