When students first begin exploring the piano repertoire, they are usually introduced to a familiar sequence of names: Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, Debussy and Ravel. These composers unquestionably deserve their place in musical history, and their works continue to shape the education of pianists around the world. However, the history of piano music is far richer and more diverse than the traditional canon suggests. Alongside these celebrated figures were countless composers whose music has been overlooked, forgotten or only recently rediscovered.
