Music theory lessons London

Music theory is often seen as difficult, dry, or overly academic, but when taught clearly, it becomes one of the most valuable parts of learning music. It reveals the structure behind notation, rhythm, harmony, and musical expression, helping you make sense of the music you play and hear.

Our music theory lessons in London are designed for adults who want to build a stronger musical foundation. Whether you are a complete beginner, a returning learner, or an experienced musician with gaps in your knowledge, we can help you develop your skills in a clear, practical, and enjoyable way.

Music theory can include notation, rhythm, time signatures, scales, key signatures, intervals, chords, harmony, cadences, musical form, score reading, transposition, and analysis. Rather than learning these topics as isolated rules, you will see how they work together in real music. This can make reading easier, sight-reading more confident, practice more focused, and interpretation more informed.

Whatever instrument you play, music theory can greatly support your musical development. It helps you recognise patterns more quickly, understand the structure of pieces, practise more intelligently, and approach new music with greater confidence.

Who Can Benefit From Music Theory Lessons?

Our music theory lessons are suitable for adult learners of all levels. You may benefit from lessons if you:

  • Are a complete beginner – Learn the foundations of notation, rhythm, scales and key signatures
  • Play an instrument or sing – Support your practical lessons with a stronger understanding of music
  • Want to improve your sight-reading – Develop greater confidence when reading and interpreting music
  • Are preparing for an exam – Receive structured support for ABRSM or Trinity music theory examinations
  • Studied theory years ago – Refresh your knowledge and rebuild your confidence step by step
  • Feel there are gaps in your knowledge – Strengthen your general musicianship and musical understanding
  • Are interested in composition or harmony – Explore chords, musical analysis, songwriting and the structure of music

If you are preparing for a graded music theory exam, we can guide you through the syllabus in a calm and structured way. Lessons may include clear explanations of each topic, practice questions, past-paper style preparation, and support with the areas you find most challenging.

If you are learning for personal enjoyment, your lessons can be shaped around your musical interests. You may wish to explore the pieces you are studying in more depth, become more confident with notation, develop your knowledge of chords and harmony, or broaden your overall musicianship.

Our approach is patient, structured, and encouraging. Concepts are explained step by step, without unnecessary jargon, and always connected to practical music-making. You will never be expected to know everything already; the aim is to build knowledge gradually and make theory feel useful, relevant, and genuinely musical.

If you would like to take music theory lessons in London, we would be delighted to help you. Whether you are starting from the beginning, preparing for an exam, or hoping to become a more confident and knowledgeable musician, our lessons will give you a clear and enjoyable way forward.

Course details

The London Piano Institute invites adults from all walks of life to study the piano and improve their skills in a wonderful environment that has been specially created for them. Whether you are an absolute beginner without any prior musical knowledge, an intermediate player or an advanced amateur pianist, you are welcome to join and improve your skills with highly qualified and experienced instructors.

Hands on the piano

Our piano lessons for adults take place weekly on a set day and time at our lovely premises, either Marylebone or the City of London.

The lessons are provided for either 30, 45 or 60 minutes, and our piano courses can be joined at any time during the year.

As various slots are available on working days up to 22:00 as well as on Saturdays, please contact our manager Stefan at enrol@londonpianoinstitute.co.uk to select the most convenient day and time for you.

As all our piano lessons for adults are highly personalised and tailored to the needs and wishes of each, you are welcome to decide whether you would like to sit the ABRSM or Trinity graded examinations.

We totally understand that you play the piano for your pleasure and enjoyment so this decision is totally optional.

We do not follow a set syllabus but rather adapt to each of our students as everyone is different and requires special attention.

We require an initial three-month minimum commitment as studying for a shorter period would not be beneficial for you. After this initial period, your piano course will continue as per normal on a rolling monthly basis at a set time and day.

In case you need to stop your course, we do require a month’s notice.

You are also most welcome to book additional improvement or intensive lessons should you want to make faster progress or prepare for an examination or performance.

If you want to do longer weekly sessions such as 90 or 120 minutes per week, please do ask and we will do our best to arrange a course tailored to your requirements.

Frequently asked questions

You are most welcome to join The London Piano Institute even if you are an absolute beginner without any prior musical experience. Our piano lessons are designed for adults who are brand new to music so no previous knowledge is necessary to join. Learning how to read music notation, and getting to know music theory will be part of your piano course so there is nothing to worry about.

Definitely not. We believe that there is no age limit to learning and enjoying playing the piano for your own pleasure.

Of course! You are most welcome to give it a try! Why not book an introductory piano lesson to find out if playing the piano is really what you want to do? Be reassured that there is no need to possess any talent to join The London Piano Institute. We believe that all adults are able to play the piano thanks to the expert guidance of our excellent piano teachers!

As an absolute beginner with no prior experience, please read our special message for you.

You do not need to own a piano to start your piano course as the purchase of the most suitable instrument for you to begin your education can be discussed with your instructor during your first piano lesson. He or she will be able to make a recommendation and advise on the best piano store to visit.

Alternatively, you can also email Stefan at enrol@londonpianoinstitute.co.uk to enquiry about our digital piano rentals.

Absolutely! The London Piano Institute is entirely dedicated to adults who wish to play for their pleasure and enjoyment so you are more than welcome to join.

You definitely need to practice if you intend to make any progress. Attending your piano lessons will offer you the guidance and feedback needed to improve in the right direction but a personal daily practice is necessary to enhance your piano skills.

It all depends on your current pianistic level. As a complete beginner, you can start with 15 minutes each day to get into the habit of practising on a daily basis. It should then increase to 30 minutes quite rapidly as you will need enough time to review and improve the material that has been studied during your piano lessons.

Not at all. All our piano instructors have been selected for their remarkable understanding of adults who play the piano for their own pleasure. They are, therefore, extremely patient, kind and supportive. We can assure you that your instructor will never judge, patronise or criticise you negatively.

Yes, we do offer preparation for the ABRSM or Trinity grade examinations from grade 1 to grade 8 (and beyond), but sitting the exams is not compulsory.

It is an extremely difficult question to answer as it all depends on your abilities and the exact goal that you have in mind. As per our experience, we can, however, say that you should be able to play some exquisite simple piano pieces after a few lessons only.

The duration of your piano course depends on your personal goal after attending for a minimum of 3 months. Your lessons will then take place on an ongoing basis until you are satisfied with your piano playing or unable to pursue your education.

Of course. If you are a proficient pianist, we would certainly recommend that you inform us prior to the beginning of your course. It should, therefore, be booked with one of our senior piano instructors, who definitely possess the right set of skills and experience to help you improve further.

Absolutely. We know how daunting it can be for a classically trained pianist to step into jazz piano playing and we would be delighted to support you in your endeavour to learn jazz piano!

We are currently working with a large number of piano instructors who have all been carefully selected by our founder Celine Gaurier-Joubert. They are all exceptional pianists and instructors who have broad experience in adult piano education and a genuine passion for teaching adult amateur pianists.

As we do not follow a set syllabus but prefer adapting to each in order to provide you with the most suitable piano education possible, the content of our piano lessons depends on your current abilities, wishes and style studied.

At The London Piano Institute, we understand that it can be difficult for some busy professionals to attend their piano lessons on a set day and time each week. We will be happy to accommodate you but please inform us before signing up as any special request is subject to availability.
